Interlibrary Loan

Looking to borrow something the Cicero Public Library doesn’t own?

Welcome to the world of Interlibrary Loan!

What is interlibrary loan?

Interlibrary loan is a way to access the collections of other libraries. If you are looking for an item that the Cicero Public Library does not own, we may be able to obtain it from another library.

How may I request an item?

When you are searching in the SWAN catalog, log in to your account so that the Place Hold button will be enabled. When you find an item you would like, just click on the Place Hold button. Make sure to keep your account updated with your correct contact information so that the library can contact you when the item arrives.

What if I need help requesting an item?

For help requesting an item, please inquire at the Reference Desk or call (708) 652-8084, x6.

Does it cost anything?

For most items received from in-state libraries, there is no charge. There is a $3.00 charge for any requested material that is received from out-of-state or from an in-state library that charges a fee. This amount will be charged to the requesting patron whether the material is picked up or not.

How long does it take to get the item?

Since the item may come from almost any library, it is difficult to estimate. It also depends on the rarity and popularity of the item. Some items arrive in 3 days and some may take 2 months or more.

How will I know when the item has arrived?

You will receive a phone call, e-mail, or letter from the library when the item has arrived. You may also check your account online in SWAN to see if the item is ready for pickup.

Once the item is ready for pickup, how much time do I have to pick it up?

You have 7 days to pick up the item. If you no longer need the item, please contact the Reference Department at (708) 652-8084, x6, so that we may return the item to the lending library.

How long may I keep an interlibrary loan item?

The initial loan period is typically 2 weeks for videos or console games and 3 weeks for all other materials. Renewal may be granted at the discretion of the lending library.

What if I damage or lose the item?

You are responsible for paying for any damaged or lost items.
